The following link is better. You drag the green button "Install version 4.9.10b2" to the Firefox Address/URL bar.
I also corrected the previously posted link.

On the VDH add-on page, see the section "September 14th 2012 YouTube issue" - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/
Thank you for clarifying the situation. Hope you can come up with a solution soon.
VDH has release a beta version that works; I have tested and downloaded just a few minutes ago. Follow instructions on the following page.
http://www.downloadhelper.net/update.php?from=4.9.9&to=4.9.10b2- Corrected beta install link - http://www.downloadhelper.net/install-beta.php?version=4.9.10b2
- NOTE - You drag the green button "Install version 4.9.10b2" to the Firefox Address/URL bar.

You'll have to excuse me, I'm pretty stupid. Can you tell me where on that page is the instruction that I have to follow? I cannot see any download for a "beta version."
Please ignore my last reply. I found my way, more by luck that judgment, to the download and am now happily downloading from youtube again. Thanks for your help with this.

New version 4.9.10 of VDH has been released that corrects recent problems. Update to the new version.
Version 4.9.10 release information
After some changes in YouTube on September 14th, Video DownloadHelper was not able to download any video from this site, except the WEBM version while using the YouTube HTML5 mode. This is fixed in this addon version.
After some changes in YouTube on August 6th, a number of users reported that all downloads were failing. This was caused by a a Youtube-generated cookie. The workaround consisting of clearing the cookies before downloading was not very convenient. This addon version takes care of that issue.
Earlier this year, some other changes at YouTube caused the FLV videos downloaded through the 'network' method to have a fixed 1.7MB size and being unplayable. This is now taken care of.
Thanks so much.
