newer cache structure is an unacceptible abomination
The new structure makes copying or backing up the cache (as part of profile) take more than 10 times as long as the old way. Copying hundreds of small directories is horribly inefficient or both time and disk space. This is the stupidest ******* thing that's ever been done to firefox and thunderbird. At MINIMUM, the old way should be an option. Until it is, good bye mozilla

Update to Firefox 17.0.1, then, maybe, explain?
There is usually no need to backup the cache.
This new structure if to facilitate a larger disk cache that have been increased to 1 GB maximum (currently 350 MB maximum; Firefox 3 versions only had a 50 MB disk cache in one folder).
This required to have the cache spread over more folders by using a hashing method to access the data.
You can set the disk cache to a lower value if you do not want that many files in it.

This newer cache change has been since what Firefox 4.0 so it is actually old now as Firefox 4.0 was released back in March 2011.
