FF29 added file folder icons next to all my bookmark bar bookmarks, which I hate. How do I get rid of 'em?

I see no way to restore things to the way they were in all previous FireFox versions.

These annoying file folder icons now clutter up my bookmarks bar, which is very compact with single or double letter bookmarks like F for facebook, $ for stocks, etc.

How do I get rid of these file folder icons?????

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#personal-bookmarks .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-icon {display:none!important}

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

Same problem here. Seems like I had it once before after an update, too, but I don't recall how I fixed it.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Instead of following these technical suggestions, which serve as evidence pointing out how Mozilla removed a nice simply GUI control from FF28 and previous releases and that people are resorting to messing around with FF's own CSS files now, I decided to go find a copy of FF28 and install it on top of FF29.

Yay, problem solved.

FYI you can download FF28 at oldapps dot com.

By the way, THIS is what I was talking about that was available in FF28 and previous versions, but has been lost in FF29. In FF28, go to View --> Tollbars --> Customize... and see this (see screen shot)

Wonderful. Got any Mac tricks for that?

You can look at the Classic Theme Restorer extension to restore some functionality that was lost with the arrival of the Australis style in Firefox 29.

This includes to select to show only text in toolbars and not icons.

Soooo. I have to use an add-on to take something off. Does anyone else think that sounds ridiculous? I suppose I'll give it a try, even though I end up trashing most add-ons I've used with FF for any number of reasons, most of which have to do with the performance of the browser. I guess I'm crazy, as I keep doing things against my better judgement.

Thanks!

Hi musicmaniac, you actually don't have to use an add-on to suppress the icons next to bookmarks. You can use a custom style rule, and apply it to Firefox using a userChrome.css file. See: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/997086#answer-564301

Your favorite smartass getting back to ya here. I have no clue what you're talking about. I'm not a developer, not a programmer - just a user. The links you provided confuse this user even more. So far, the add-on is OK. I was able to get rid of the icons, the presence of which severely limited the number of bookmarks I could put on the toolbar - all for the sake of somebody's idea of a better appearance. It hasn't caused any problems yet.

I appreciate your attention.
