how can i change the thunderbird message list background color
My wife's profile displays with a dark blue with black text message item line that makes the info (subject, date, etc) unreadable. I'd like to make it so that the item changes to white text when the item is selected

See if something there will help. Like getting rid of a blue background.
No menu bar with Tools? Press the alt key.
I think you will have to dig a little deeper into the question of how to change the colors of elements of the Threads Pane, using a custom userChrome.css file. Or, choose a different theme that gives a satisfactory display.
