When sending an email or saving as draft, it hangs at "attaching". Why?

I am frequently experiencing problems when sending an email or saving one as a draft. It hangs with the window displaying "attaching" (See attached screen shot). Very occasionally it will clear itself and all is well in the end but mostly it will hang for ever and a day.

This has only been occurring over the last month and not consistently, although now it is happening more often than not.
