I used to be able to open up my email and right click on an image, which would allow me to select 'open in new tab'. This would allow the picture to display in an new tab, regardless of it being a JPG, JPEG, GIF, ect...

Now it forces me to either save it or open it in a different way. I have gone into options>applications and attempted to 'preview in firefox' but the option is not available for JPG, JPEG, GIF, ect...

I have the the most updated version of Firefox, so I honestly dont know what else to do.

If you right click, select "View Image".

As a temporary work around try this add on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fire.../?src=search

I tried your solution, but sadly it still prompted me to save it as before.

ALTHOUGH, your solution did work for any image in gmail, the problem still exists inside of AOL mail.

Check with AOL mail support, as AOL may not be linking directly to the image attachment.

When you hover the cursor over the link for that "image" attachment, what appears in the lower-left corner of the browser window?

more options

When i hover over the image the following is seen:

"https://mail.aol.com/webmail...." followed with the rest of the url and it usually ends in ".jpg"

so it should be allowed to follow that link into the next tab, but when you right click and choose an option to view said image, you are forced to save.
