[UPDATE: So after going mad and trying just about everything, the problem seems to have finally been resolved. A massive update to Windows 10 (several restarts, big black screen showing update progress after each reboot) was released recently and the problems have gone away! Hoorah. Looks like it was a problem on Microsoft's end, not Mozilla's :). Thanks]

Heya,

Since I updated to the latest version of Firefox, v43.09b, via the auto updates option, fonts aren't displaying right anywhere on it, on Windows 10, 64bit. MSIE or Chrome doesn't have this problem (I checked for any issues with ClearType text) but none whatsoever with them 2. However, I don't like either of them and have previously donated to Mozilla so would like some help on this (not that I am any better than anyone else but I would like some good karma to come back to me to resolve this!)

I've also gone into Options -> Advanced -> Use hardware acceleration when available. I turn this off and it goes back to how it should be but only for a few minutes then it goes back to being distorted. I even tried changing the default font that is displayed but that had no effect.

I don't know if it's clear from the screenshot, but increasing the font size of the webpage doesn't actually work - they're out of proportion as I said, when I turn on then off hardware acc & restart browser, it works for a few mins then goes back to this awful way.

How They Look Right Now :::

How They After Turning On, then Off Hardware Acceleration, then restarting browser :::

Stats: Windows 10 64bit with latest KB's installed, nVidia latest graphics drivers, latest version of Firefox

This is driving me mad, please help :(

Note: This could be a transient beta issue, I haven't searched for a bug report...

In both the Google results page and BBC Sport page examples, my Firefox uses Arial. If you right-click the problem text and choose Inspect Element (Q) from the context menu, the Inspector should open in the lower part of the tab. On the right side, there are various sections you can show, click Fonts to see which font your Firefox actually is using. Is it Arial or something else?

Does Arial look wrong on more plainly styled pages like this one:

https://jeffersonscher.com/res/jstest.php

Actually, that page uses the default sans-serif font set on the Options page:

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options

In the left column, click Content, then click the "Advanced" button.

I think the default sans-serif font on Windows is Arial, but I don't have Windows 10 handy to compare.

Did this only happen with older Firefox 43 beta versions (beta 1-8)?

Note that you always need to close and restart Firefox after toggling hardware acceleration.

You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).

You can try different default fonts and temporarily disable website fonts to test the selected default font.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced
  • [ ] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) to see if that helps.

Thanks for the reply bud. I've had to turn off letting websites use their own stylesheet for now and have overridden this with setting Verdana as the default font @ 14pt. The problem is, a lot of my other websites look messed up (anything less than 14pt is not pleasant to my eyes and screen). It is Arial just to confirm (default).

Thanks for the reply. This has happened since b8 and now I'm on b9. I tried rolling back to v42 but no luck. Tried deleting my profile (did Refresh Firefox) this didn't work either. Tried deleting local FontCache in All Profiles/Local (on C:\...Appdata). nVidia drivers are latest to date. Even tried rolling back the drivers but hasn't worked either.

The problem with the hardware accel route is that even after restarting, it only lasts a few minutes then suddenly...*poof* goes back to this urgh way of showing fonts. I've overridden fonts that websites use with Verdana @ 14pt but this has ruined a no. of sites I use (anything less than 14pt @ Verdana is urgh for me).
