I know where the Firefox map is (C:\Users\MyName\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\e8sn4xgq.default) - here I find a map Bookmarkbackups but I cannot find the actual Bookmarks. My problem is that I have all my data on a seperate partition. I now and then make images of my C partition and sometimes need to return to an earlier image. I just now discovered that I loose all Firefox Bookmark changes when I do that.

I also know how to export the bookmarks to an html file an my D partition. But I need to remember doing that regularly.

With Internet Explorer it is possible to change the location of the bookmarks. Whenever I return to an earlier image of my C partition my Favourites stay unchanged on D Couldn't this be done with Firefox?

You can make Firefox create an automatic HTML backup (bookmarks.html) when Firefox is closed by setting browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML to true on the about:config page.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

This HTML backup is created by default in the profile folder as bookmarks.html every time you close Firefox, but you can set the path and file name via the browser.bookmarks.file pref on the about:config page.

The browser.bookmarks.file pref doesn't exist by default and you need to create a new String pref with the name browser.bookmarks.file and set the value to the full path of the backup bookmarks.html file including the file name.

Note: an HTML backup doesn't preserve tags and annotations, so you lose those if you need to import the HTML backup.

The problem is you are overwritting the files with the current data with older data. Why are you sometimes need to return to an earlier image?

This can be used to create a backup of your profile anywhere you want, including another hard drive.

These add-ons can be a great help by backing up and restoring Firefox

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) {web link} FEBE allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions, history, passwords, and more. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up -- It will actually rebuild your saved files individually into installable .xpi files. It will also make backups of files that you choose.

Thanks to both of you for your answers. I started by installing Febe and now have automatic backups.

Still this automatic backup requires me to remember to restore Firefox every time I go back to an earlier image. Being able to move the Firefox bookmarks to another partition would be better.

"Why are you sometimes need to return to an earlier image?" I know few people see the use of imaging software. I have used it very often already. Sometimes when a program starts acting up strangely - sometimes after installing a new program that causes problems. Lately I used it to go back to Windows7 after having tried Windows 10 Free upgrade. Thanks to imaging software my 8 year old Dell desktop still runs smoothly.
