Cannot send or receive messages, IMAP 4 command not recognised, login/password problems
Hello,
I have a problem on Mozilla Thunderbird (downloaded version 45.1.1) which means I have been unable to send or receive messages for the last couple of days. It seemed to start when my internet service provider (Talk Talk) had a server/network problem but they have informed me that the outage affecting (amongst others) tiscali type addresses was definitely solved around midday yesterday (3 July 2016).
I have received a number of error messages in the following order:
Login to server imap.tiscali.co.uk failed, server (my email address in tiscali.co.uk format) has disconnected, this may be due to a server or network problem. The current operation on 'Inbox' did not succeed. The mail server for account (my email address) responded: unrecognised IMAP4 command.
I am also being continually prompted to enter my password but this is not accepted and the same dialogue box appears again.
Please note that I have not changed or amended any of the settings in Thunderbird.
Any advice or help much appreciated!
Thanks,
Andy

To eliminate the possibility of third party programs being the cause, please undertake the following test. Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
Does your mail work while in safe mode with networking?
Hi Matt,
Thanks for your advice back in July 2016, the mail did work whilst in safe mode with networking solving the problem. However, I have now encountered exactly the same issue and this time it makes no difference when in the alternative mode.
I have also attempted to send a test message from my Talk Talk webmail account to my Thunderbird email account but this is not received at the destination end.
Any further advice or suggestions appreciated.
Kind regards,
Andy
PS Will contact Talk Talk to eliminate possibility of a fault from their side.
