Hangouts crashed while as I composed an SMS message. If G-mail crashes, my unfinished email is saved as a draft, easily recovered. Not so with SMS? Why not?

When something suddenly causes my computer to crash, G-mail saves my partially finished e-mail messages as drafts, right in my e-mail environment. -An easy recovery. Apparently not so in the Hangouts environment. In the middle of composing an SMS message, I dragged the window up to the left. Oddly, the window left traces that evenly disappeared, leaving a proper window in it's new place. Within ten seconds, my whole computer crashed. Relying on my experience with G-mail, I expected Hangouts to swoop my unfinished SMS message into a saved draft form. Alas, restarting my computer and perambulating back at Hangouts, I saw that the message was apparently not saved. Where did it go? Is it, in fact, irretrievable?

Dear Kammuse,

Gmail is an email service, and automatically saves a draft, whereas Hangouts is an SMS service where there is no drafts folder. It does save drafts if it has the chance, and knows that it is going to be closed, but otherwise, if it crashes, it won't show up. This is because drafts are saved in the actual conversation, instead of a folder. If you go back and don't find it in the conversation, or if you don't have a keylogger(not many do), it's as good as gone.

Hope I could help, emilsmithau

What is causing the computer to crash?

more options

I don't honestly know why - I just know why there weren't drafts after crashing.

Just like when you shut down the computer, everything is cleared out unless it was saved first.

Write your message using a text/word program. Save the message. If there is anther crash, the message is still waiting for you.

But you can't save manually in services like Docs, or Hangouts, so if it crashes and something went wrong while writing, you've lost it. Do what FredmcD is saying, I think that should be right.
