For the last few weeks, at the least, I have been getting a notification to update Firefox upon initial launch. I update, shut down Firefox, and restart. Right away I am again given the update notification.

I would guess because you are around 5 updates behind according to your version # of 57,0,4 and current version is 59.0.2 Also it seems that the updates may not be taking. Please make backups :

Then do a install over top with a full version installer from here :

Save the file. Then Close Firefox.
