Firefox updated and lost all my most usesites and saved passwordsd web

more options

This last update lost my passwords and most used websites. I tried contacting firefox but my login doesn't work. I went to my account and was signed in and changed my password for firefox and got the email saying I changed mt password and it still won't login for firefox support. I did the sync but no help.

Hi Shazam78, sorry to hear about your data loss.

If you haven't already, could you shut down and restart Windows to clear file locks.

Then, could you check whether Firefox performed a Refresh: that would have placed your old data in a folder on your Windows desktop called Old Firefox Data. Do you see anything like that?

more options

I've restarted windows many times and the browser. I refreshed it also. It might be that I'm logged it but when I got to firefox support it says I have no account. The browser says I do.

Sorry about the account confusion: this forum is much older than Firefox Accounts and uses its own user names and passwords.

If you Refreshed Firefox, the Old Firefox Data folder might not have the older settings, just the ones from after the problem started. However, if you double-click into that folder and look at what is in there, you might get a sense of how old the data is, for example, if you have more than one folder inside.

I don't have an old firefox data rhat I know of. The firefox is telling me there's another update already. I'm afraid to let it. What will I lose now. where would I find this old folder?

more options

Let's start from the beginning:

When Firefox's Refresh feature runs, it moves your profile folder containing your Firefox data/settings to your Windows desktop inside a folder named Old Firefox Data.

Do you see a folder like that, on your Windows desktop?

If so, double-click into that folder. How many profile folders do you see here? Profile folders have a partially random name, like:

a1b2c3d4.default

You mentioned performing a Refresh AFTER this problem started. Do you have any folders from BEFORE this problem started?

P.S. Do not delete anything from this folder until this problem is solved.

There are no folders name old firefox on my desktop. I've been using firefox for years and that never happened before either. Maybe your talking about a different refresh. When I go to menu my email is there with a sync like button and I've been doing that. I didn't see a different one.

Okay, what other data got lost?

(A) Saved logins -- none listed now here:

  • Windows: "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options
  • Mac: "3-bar" menu button (or Firefox menu) > Preferences
  • Linux: "3-bar" menu button (or Edit menu) > Preferences
  • Any system: type or paste about:preferences into the address bar and press Enter/Return to load it

In the left column, click "Privacy & Security".

Then on the right side, click the "Saved Logins" button.

(B) Most used sites

Are these your bookmarks, or the tiles on the new tab page, or something else?

For bookmarks, sometimes the problem is that bars and button are hidden and you still have your data. Here are the steps to restore those toolbar elements:

(A) Bookmarks Toolbar

Use one of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Toolbars button (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, Menu Bar, or other bars, click it on the list.

(B) Bookmarks Menu toolbar button

You can add the optional bookmarks menu button () using either:

  • The method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?
    • Click the "Library" button:
    • Click "Bookmarks"
    • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
    • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

Anything there?
