Why did the firefox refresh button delete all of my bookmarks
When I opened my firefox browser today I got a pop up that said it is running slow and I need to use the "referesh feature". I did and it deleted all of my bookmarks and bookmark tooolbars. it said it would not delete them. It said I can find my profile by going to
menu button click Help and select Troubleshooting Information. The Troubleshooting Information tab will open.
Under the Application Basics section, click on Open Folder. Your profile folder will open. The places.sqlite file contains all your Firefox bookmarks and lists of all the files you've downloaded and websites you’ve visited. When I click on this...it says i am opening with the wrong application. I try to use firefox to open and it doesn't work. There is also a "bookmarkbackups" folder but that won't work...it just has a bunch of folders with goofy names like "bookmarks-2019-09-04_1461_Q1NrP912z2tObdYK1aHQ6w=="
this a a disaster. I have so many bookmarks. Firefox has so many useless updates nowadays. They are always changing stuff and making stuff worse

Refreshing Firefox {web link} is a LAST RESORT ! !
Refreshing Firefox -- easily fix most problems
If you're having problems with Firefox, refreshing it can help. The refresh feature fixes many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information like bookmarks and open tabs. Everything else, like user settings and add-ons, are removed. Note: Refresh saves your old profile to the desktop in a folder called Old Firefox.
Look on your desktop. Do you see a folder called; Old Firefox? Look inside. Look for the folder with the latest creation date.

if anybody else is having this problem, try closing firefox and then opening again...i did this and my bookmarks reappeared...weird
It is possible that Firefox detected that places.sqlite was corrupted and created a new places.sqlite. Firefox will use the most recent compressed .jsonlz4 backup in the backups in the bookmarkbackups folder to rebuild the bookmarks.
Files with a name like "bookmarks-2019-09-04_1461_Q1NrP912z2tObdYK1aHQ6w==" are automatically created compressed .jsonlz4 backups that you can use to restore the bookmarks.
This backup was created September 4th and contains 1461 bookmark items.
The name of an automatically created JSON bookmarks backup in the bookmarkbackups folder includes a total item count (folders and separators included) and an hash value to prevent saving the same backup more than once. You also see this count in the Restore menu drop-down list in the Library.
- Bookmarks -> Show All Bookmarks -> Import & Backup -> Restore
- bookmarks-YYYY-MM-DD_<item count>_<hash>.jsonlz4.
