I have had to change my gmail password on another account, so have also changed it in Thunderbird, but now I cannot send/receive emails in Thunderbird, although I can on my phone and tablet, which both now use the changed password. I changed my password in the Thunderbird “Saved Logins” page but it would not work, but the entry there originally was something totally different from my password, although unfortunately I did not note the wording before I replaced it with my new password. When I try to send a message I get the popup “Sending of the message failed. The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP) smtp.gmail.com was lost in the middle of the transaction. Try again.” I also sometimes get the message “Login to server imap.gmail.com with username ……….@gmail.com failed” Under saved logins the entry for my gmail account is: Oauth://accounts.google.com (https:mail.google.com/) with my gmail address as username, plus the password, which is accepted by my phone and tablet. I have two email accounts, the other works normally, but with the gmail account instead of the cursor showing it is the hourglass. I also How can I restore normality

The 'password' for the oauth:// entry is a string of 46 random characters, and is stored in Options when you enter the regular account password in the OAuth browser window. So, if you changed the account password, Remove the oauth:// token plus any imap:// or smtp:// passwords, if present, restart TB, and enter the new account password in the browser window when prompted.

I have done what you suggest, deleted the gmail entry under “passwords”. When I attempted to send an email to myself I was prompted to enter my password, which I did; I checked options/ passwords and the gmail entry had been reinstated exactly as it was originally. The email I sent to myself was received on my phone but not in Thunderbird – there was a message “unable to connect to imap server, you may have exceeded the maximum number etc.”(cannot give the whole message as it quickly disappears before I can copy). I checked and the maximum number is set to 5; there was also a message that it could not be saved. I also have a talktalk email account on Thunderbird – I sent an email to my gmail account from the talktalk one and it displayed again on my phone but not Thunderbird. When I sent from gmail there was a message could not save, To sum up, the gmail account will now send and receive, but not display in either the inbox or the sent box. The hourglass is constantly showing when the gmail account is selected but not with the talktalk account.

This isn't going to work. For this account:

Everything already set up as you suggest except that authorization was not OAuth2 - changed that and it still does not work. I think the only solution now is to uninstall/re-install Thunderbird and add the two accounts. I have copied my address lists, presumably all my emails will be in the inbox rather than various folders, but I can easily transfer as required. Thank you for spending so much time to no avail - it is much appreciated.

more options

Delete the Gmail passwords and oauth:// entries from Tools/Options/Security/Passwords/Saved Passwords, restart TB, and enter the new password in the OAuth2 browser window when prompted.

You'll be wasting your time. The problem appears to be in your Thunderbird profile. Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.

I have copied my address lists, presumably all my emails will be in the inbox rather than various folders, but I can easily transfer as required.

It's recommended to create full profile backups on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

Presumably I could delete Thunderbird, then delete the profile, then reinstall Thunderbird, when a new profile would be produced. All my emails appear to be on the gmail server so would presumably be automatically imported, with the same folder descriptions. I have copied the profile help page to a file for future reference.

What exactly isn't working?

Just as before. I can send an email to my gmail address using the gmail account and receive it in MS Mail, but not in Thunderbird, nor is the outgoing email saved in Thunderbird. No emails received in Thunderbird since 27 January - I am now using the inferior MS Mail.
