Automatic updates despite setting "Check for updates, but let ..."

For some weeks now, updates that have been carried out automatically have bugged me, even though "Check for updates, ..." is set. The last version was 68.10.0 a few days ago. Again and again I had problems with the calendar function due to the automatic updates. I use "Provider for Google Calendar" to synchronize appointments. I do not want to make address data or birthdays accessible to Google and I used Thunderbirthday to display birthdays locally. A few days ago, there was again an automatic update to 78.0 (32bit) and total failure of all created (Google) calendars and the birthday calendar. "Provider for Google Calendar" is no longer compatible, eat or die ...! I'm getting tired of this (Thunderbird)! Why can't I turn off these goddamn automatic updates, why do I have new updates in quick succession that always cause calendar problems? Why is there no built-in tool to restore the previous version? How can I solve my calendar problem under 78.0 and also bring the local birthday calendar back to life?

Sorry you are having trouble. I can tell you that automatic updates are disabled at the update servers used by Thunderbird - I've tested it myself several times, as have others on the team.

The most likely reason for your updates is they are being caused by something other than Thunderbird - for example a program that provides "security updates", even some packages that provide AV and malware protection. Or some corporate tool. Check Control Panel > Programs - what do you see installed ?

As for the provider addon, the author has stated that he is working on it. Hopefully we will see something soon.

Thunderbird 68 is not getting automatic upgrades to 78. 78 is not an update to 68. Something else is upgrading your Thunderbird installation. I have 68 and when I go to Help > About, it says already up to date. You definitely have a software updater program running on your pc which installed 78. It is easier to blame 68. Some antivirus programs have a software updater. Thunderbird has no control over third-party updater programs. You can download 68 from here https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/thunderbird/releases/ but that won't end your troubles as long as something else is updating Thunderbird on your system.

HelloMery, hello Stans, You guys helped me a lot. After reinstalling TB68.10.0 and the usual profile trickery, it ran to Thunderbirthday. I had to reinstall it from a file, after that everything worked. After a long search, I found the AVIRA virus scanner as the cause of the unwanted upgrades ... Develop a habit of regularly backing up your Thunderbird profile folder. Also, make sure you add your profile folder or the %APPDATA%\Thunderbird\Profiles\ folder to your antivirus' exclusions list so that it doesn't interfere with Tbird's normal functioning.
