How to prevent distibution list from expanding all names when sending an email

My question is "HOW TO". When I send an email to distribution list, each name included in this distibution list appears in "to" section. So each receiving people get all details and huge list of names etc... I don't want this to happen. I do not want to use bcc too. Instead I am looking at how I could I have only distibution list name or description appearing in "to" section (for example "Sales Team" rather than each name of the Sales Team). Many Thanks for your help.

You are referring to corporate mail systems. Exchange server also has the option. But it only ever worked within the corporate network. But historically corporate mailing lists on had local and WAN email addresses in them.

Use BCC instead of too and everyone does not see the entire list. Use to and everyone sees all too addresses.

That is how email works and it has not changed since some time on the mid 1980s in that regard. List names are just a local convenience. They exist on your local machine or in the case of web mail on the server. But they do not get shared around the internet. For a server to direct mail to an email address it must have an email address listed in the To: CC: or BCC fields to send it to.

Thanks Matt for your answer I am using email since mid 1980s (and a system called PROFS Professional Office System within IBM). I used Lotus Notes since end of 1990s, still working at IBM, and we did have this option to not expand and show the names within distribution list but only show name of a distribution list. I understand this is not available with Thunderbird. Thanks for your time.
