ctrl+w stopped working. I can no longer close tabs in firefox using this shortcut. I have tried using the shortcut add-on but no matter what combination i use with ctrl+* nothing will close tabs. i know i can use ctrl+F4 but this is very annoying. What happened and is anyone else having this issue??

Any ideas would be so helpful. Did I turn off something on windows??

Are you trying to close a pinned tab via "Ctrl+W" as that won't work, you can only close a normal tab via "Ctrl+W". To close a pinned tab, you either need to middle-click the tab with the mouse wheel or use the right-click context menu.

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or if userChrome.css/userContent.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the Default System theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

I already tried both of these and unfortunately it did not help.

So Troubleshoot Mode doesn't work as well?

Do you at least see "Close Tab" if you right-click a tab?

Does this work in a new window?

Yes it shows but doesn't show the shortcut next to it and no it doesn't work in troubleshooting mode.

Can you close the tab via the right-click context menu or with a middle-click ? The Tab context menu doesn't show any keyboard shortcuts for me, the "Close Tab" entry with the "Ctrl+W" shortcut is shown if I open the Menu bar via the keyboard (Alt+F) and not if I click the mouse to open the File menu.

Did you try a new window ?

Yes I can close tabs with the context menu and I also see the same with the drop down menu options. There are no about:config options to change ctrl+w either that I have found. Also I do not have a middle mouse button on my trackpad.
