Installed new modem with prior router. internet is now back on-line but new emails are not downloading.

I guess your new router is not correctly configured. If it was supplied by you internet provider, I suggest you consult with them about how to configure it to route emails which travel on different ports to web pages. If it came with a VPN you might try turning that off.
