That indicates that your correspondents are starting new threads instead of replying to your messages. Some options:
- Ask your correspondents to reply instead.
- Turn on conversations in Thunderbird. I have a button for conversations in my main toolbar. If you don't see it there, you can customize the toolbard to add it.
- See if sorting by threads in Thunderbird helps. View - Sort by
