I had Firefox set to open links in the same tab unless otherwise specified and when I started Firefox today that feature was no longer active although nothing had been changed and I had not run any updates to the browser. How can I make Firefox stop opening everything in a new tab this is driving me batty?

If you close Firefox, then start Firefox in Safe Mode, does the problem still occur? For instructions on starting in Safe Mode, see Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

Middle-click will open a link in a new tab, so another possibility is that you set your mouse to middle-click when you use the left button.
