PDF files used to open with a "save" option, and I have Acrobat 9 Pro installed on my system (running Windows 7). Now, that icon is gone and I can't save. Is there another way to configure the plug-in or is Firefox preventing this or what? THANK YOU.

Under "Applications", I'm set to "open Adobe Acrobat inside Firefox" (which is what I have always done, then if I wanted to, I saved the PDF file elsewhere). should I/ can I open the PDFs outside Firefox, with my Adobe 9 Pro program?

pdf files can be opened directly with an Adobe program or probably other readers. You will need to save the files and know the location. You will then be able to open the files with a suitable reader, or open the adobe reader then the specific file.

Some Adobe pdf files may have odd security settings controlling what you are able to do with them, but normally pdfs can be saved, at least in the existing unedited format.

If you still have Adobe Acrobat installed (and it appears you have if you use it within firefox) can you still access the program from your program list. If so it will be easy enough to put a shortcut icon back on your desktop or start menu.

Hello and thanks for replying. I have no problem with my Adobe Pro program and use PDFs all the time. Suddenly, however, when a PDF comes up in Firefox (which is the only browser I use), I don't get the save option. And I cannot see a way to configure Firefox to bring up PDFs outside Firefox proper. For example, if I use Proquest through my library, I can view PDF files as before, but I no longer have the option to download/save them. I cannot access such PDFs outside a browser (which seems to be what you are referring to). So: for PDFs that can only be accessed from within Firefox, how do I get the SAVE option to come up, so that I can "save as" to another location? thank you for thinking about this!! Happy holidays.

I use XP not Windows 7, but surely you can open Acrobat Reader as a program, then choose to open a specific pdf file with that, or alternatively you can choose to open a specific pdf file with a chosen application, and choose Acrobat instead of FireFox.

You need to save the pdf files to your computer. When I open a pdf in firefox I get the option to save to the computer from a toolbar within the pdf page/tab.

If I disable my Acrobat plugin then instead of it opening as a tab/window I will get options to save the file or to open directly with Acrobat Reader.

Hi there, I had the same problem and have been HUNTING for a solution - this is it though. Open a PDF that you have found on a search which will open in acrobat. Right click on the toolbar where you can select 'print' and all that. It will bring up a menu - go right to the last option which is 'more tools'. Under the option 'file toolbar' you will see that you can check the option to 'save a copy' and viola - if you go back to that pdf you will see the save option there!

then look under content for Adobe Acrobat forms etc;
note a choice of options is usually available

Firefox is of course a web browser.
Acrobat reader is Adobe's program used to read and display the pfd files on your computer. Other programs may be used instead of Acrobat reader. You would normally have the Acrobat program and the pdf file present on the local computer, often both on the same hard drive, if you were opening individual pdf files directly with Acrobat.

Firefox uses a plugin so that it may use Acrobat to open pdf files and display the results within a firefox window or tab. If you do not have that plugin installed, or it is not enabled firefox may be unsure what to do with the file and offer to save it to whatever your default local download location is, without attempting to open the file in firefox.

Try this: Open a PDF web page... right click on it and you should see a menu item "Page Display Preferences." Selecting this will bring up Adobe Acrobat preferences.

I can't exactly say which command fixed it (I clicked 2 boxes) but try:

- On the "Documets" category: uncheck "Allow Documents to hide..." - On the "Internet" category: uncheck "Open in Read Mode by Default"

Then restart firefox. One of those seems to have fixed it for me.
