WEB PAGE says I need Windows media player 11 plugin. Have ver. 12 on computer. Is this not a backward step?

In order to see media on several web pages, it says I need to download plugin Windows media player v. 11. Windows 7 on computer has Windows media player 12. Is this going backwards or or these 2 separate things, i.e. program vs plugin? Thanks, Sara

The plugin should work with WMP 12 as well.
