I was previously running firefox 7. I updated when I suddenly was unable to click on and open any menus or bookmark toolbar folders (several restarts did not resolve the issue, but updating did). Java was working well in firefox 7. I have looked all over trying to find what to do to make java and firefox work properly and followed all of those instructions but am unable to make it work. I don't know if java showed up in my plugins before, but it is not now.

It appears the same 'old' trick/fix still works, as root:

  1. cd /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
  2. ln -s /usr/java/jre1.6.0_29/lib/i386/libnpjp2.so libjavaplugin.so

now restart FF8 and java should be fine To verify try something using like: http://javatester.org/version.html

This is a slight modification of: https://www.java.com/en/download/help/linux_install.xml
