Why do I get é when I type in backslash. IE9 doesn`t seem to be doing that...

When I hold Shift and then type in the numerals from 1 through 0, I get !"/$%?&*()

Note that 2, 3 and 6 are incorrect.

Typing in backslash gives me é, and if I hold Shift, it gives me É.

IE9 isn`t giving me the same issues, so I suspect it`s FireFox.

Turns out my concerns were a bit premature. I didn't restart my computer because I was setting it up for the first time.

Cardinal rule: first sign of trouble, restart computer and then try it again.

It's all good now.

To further append my own reply, it seems my keyboard can be configured to more than one language. I changed it back to US and it works fine.

The default keys to rotate the layout is a combination (Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift) that can easily be used in Firefox to activate a menu item.
To avoid an unintentional switch, assign a specific key sequence (Alt/Ctrl+Shift+number) to select keyboard layouts and remove the key combination to rotate layouts (Alt+Shift or Ctrl+Shift)

  • Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Keyboards and Languages > Change keyboards > Advanced key settings > Change key sequence
