Firefox crashes
Recieved request to update FF. I said yes, now FF doesn't open except into a crash window which I documented and send. I then went (after several attempts) to download the full 10.x version from your download page. It still opens with a crash. (Thank goodness I have I/E to communicate w/you)
Your instructions were to open the latest crash report and put it here.
Crash ID: bp-ccfa3b9c-b4f9-43fd-b78f-6dfa72120202
Alle antwurden (13)
I note you are concerned about your bookmarks. The Firefox bookmarks are not much use without a working Firefox, but you you should immediately try to preserve what you have by copying your profile folder and all its subfolders and files somewhere safe (outside firefox program and profile paths - to your Windows desktop for instance).
See backing up your information
I will check you crash ID in a few minutes.
Hi Jerry,
Does Firefox crash in safe mode? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Safe%20Mode
(Access Safe Mode by holding down the shift key while launching Firefox)
Let me know the results.
All/anyone.... All instructions from FAQ fail. I can't even hold down the shift key and click on the icon without crashing.
Jerry
Funny that someone would recommend me backing up my bookmarks without having the capabilities of even opening FF to get to bookmarks.
If anyone can answer the cause of the crash please do.
Right now, not even sure if I removed FF from setup/control panel/....
And download FF10x again (thru I/E... LOL) whether it will work.
Need confirmation.
THanks
If you have no need to keep any bookmarks, cookies, saved passwords etc. I recommend just following the instructions here:
Completely clean install with a brand new profile.
This is apparently a fairly new crash. Sometimes startup crashes are caused by malware so it is a good idea to try to investigate that as a possible reason. A bug has been filed for this and so some investigations will be done, and if it becomes a common crash someone, one way or another is going to find a fix for it, but that may take a while.

You could also try the advice in firefox crashes to see if for instance updating drivers etc help.
As a temporary measure you could consider installing firefox portable legacy 3.6, that is still supported and safe and may be installed as an additional browser: http://portableapps.com/news/2012-02-01_-_firefox_portable_3.6.26_released
Sorry I posted initially without full info, as it was rather slow in obtaining crash stats, I wanted to get the important info across first.
If you read what I posted and the links you will note that Firefox creates several files that have bookmark information in them.
My next post then suggested that you install Firefox portable. It is fairly easy then to use Firefox Portable and the bookmark files that you have saved. Or use that bookmark information etc in another install of firefox once it is working, the important point being to make sure the info is preserved. (You could inadvertently overwrite or destroy it in re-install attempts etc)

Same problem - Firefox works in windows safe mode with networking. Firefox safe mode (shift key down) hangs. Also updated AVGFree and Thunderbird - not sure if connected.

Ok John, others AND FF employees.. Please help!!!!
I went to control panel and removed FF (but left the person data) , downloaded 10.x again and still problem.
I will now go and delete from control panel WITH deleting personal data..
Went to control panel and removed FF including all personal data.....
Finally worked, but lost everything (sorta).
I DID copy my profile page to a misc directory.
Do I want to reload this or could the corruption be in there as well?
Hi billfen,
may I suggest you read firefox crashes and then post your own question, if possible including system information and recent crash IDs. By all means read this and other threads you may find useful information, but by asking your own question we can see more info specific to your own problem.
I am not Firefox staff just another user like yourselves, although today in particular there are Firefox staff making an effort to answer questions so it is a good day to ask questions.
Hi again Jerry,
At least your bookmarks will be safe. There is a possiblity that the crashing problem may have been resolved merely by creating a new profile. We could just restore the profile exactly as it was, but in all probability that would just cause crashes again.
First of all create a new profile, call it something like New1. Leave the original that Firefox created as it is, if problems occur later you may need to revert to using that. You may as well also create another New2 . Ensure you create new profiles in empty folders, and once you do create them I suggest you
- make a note of the profile folders name, (firefox adds some random characters)
- do not rename or delete profiles you have created (just delete shortcut/command lines that use them)
With New1 be conservative.
make a copy of the file places.sqlite that you have already put somewhere safe and use it to replace the existing file in the new profile. Now when you use the profile New1 it should have all your old history and bookmarks.
With New2 restore most of the existing profile.
follow the instructions in http://kb.mozillazine.org/Transferring_data_to_a_new_profile_-_Firefox that should install ok without crashing
