I get alerts from Norton regarding 'updater.exe'. Is this Firefox updating itself?

I've recently decided to use Firefox instead of IE9 so I'm new to it's way of operating. I've noticed that whenever I use it for the first time in a session I receive a Norton alert to the effect that 'updater.exe' has been downloaded and that it is safe and trusted &c..

Is this normal? Is this Firefox checking for updates and applying them? All malware/virus checks have been negative.

Thankyou for your reply, but with respect this is not the same problem. The download is updater.exe (the terminal 'r' is the distinction) and is a file associated with Mozilla not Norton (or Symantec). The alert is from my anti-virus, that's the only connection to Norton.
