Does FF 19.0.2 bookmark the folders that contain individual bookmarks and individual bookmarks files too? If so, how can I do that? In the past an html or json file I have restored/imported has not contained all the original Bookmark folders and files. Thank you.

Saving and restoring bookmarks is all-or-nothing. You cannot choose which ones to save or restore. The same is true of synching, unfortunately.

Thank you for your quick reply! When I open a html backup file in Firefox browse, I do not see the hundreds of folders I had full of bookmarked url's. I suspect that FF only saves so much - keeps the last 500 or so bookmarks only. Anything to that?

Did you check whether the bookmarks weren't moved to another folder?

Is this happening with specific bookmarks like the Bookmarks Toolbar folder?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox Profile Folder.

I had reset FF to factory defaults last week. But before so I created the html backup file that now is not accepted. Is it possible that I was supposed to purge FF totally out of my Ubuntu 10.04 system before re-installing FF? I also wonder if that html file is somehow damaged due to the erratic state of FF that caused me to Reset. What do you think? I will also check your links. Thank you.

Can you open that HTML file in Firefox?

  • File > Open File
  • Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import Bookmarks from HTML

Make sure that the HTML file has a .html file extension.

Yes, I can open the html file in FF browser. When I Import html file the CPU zooms up to 112% which is intolerable. I wait 30 seconds, then kill the FF process using System Monitor in Ubuntu 10.04. And yes, the extension is .html

I have seen forum posts from people claiming to have over 1000 bookmarks, and I have well over 600, so 500 is definitely not a limit.

If importing the HTML doesn't work properly then there may be a problem with one or more of the bookmarks in it and you try try to use an editor to split out the content in some parts to see if you can identify the problem.
