Windows 7 dell laptop. I can search in the window that normally has the web address but since the New Private Window facility was introduced, when I type a query into the normal Search field I do not get a response. If I select a New Window the search field is also unresponsive.

Thanks very much for your quick response. Unfortunately it did not fix the problem. So I deleted the whole program including my bookmarks etc and did a re install which fixed everything. I had tried this before but left the bookmarks etc there but it did not work. Again my thanks.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).
