The address bar is suggesting items that aren't Bookmarked, when I have it set to only suggest Bookmarks.

I set the address bar to only suggest bookmarked sites, and it continues to suggest more sites that are not bookmarked. They don't show up as bookmarks, with a star or in the drop-down menu. They appear as auto-completed suggestions within the address bar itself. I know that they aren't from my history, either, since I've set Firefox not to keep track of history and quite a few of these sites are ones I've never been to before. I've tried the suggestion on this site to set them as bookmarks, delete them from the drop-down menu's suggestions, and delete them from my bookmarks, which has worked on a few of these sites but doesn't work on any other ones. What am I missing?

Can't you remove those entries if you highlight them in the drop-down list and press the Delete key (not not click them with the mouse)?

Can you remove them if you open them and use "Forget About This Site" in the History sidebar (Ctrl+H)?

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database file in the Firefox profile folder if this didn't help.

As I said, they're not appearing in the drop-down list, but in the address bar itself. I also tried to 'Forget About This Site' thing and that didn't help either.

The support link you gave me suggested deleting the places.sqlite file altogether and letting it create a new one. I tried that, and it seems to be working.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.

(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)

  • You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • Or open the Help menu and click on the Restart with Add-ons Disabled... menu item while Firefox is running.

Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article for that.

To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.

Thank you.

The problem is present in Safe Mode. I've been dealing with it by deleting the places.sqlite file, but a bit later, the problem always comes back and it's suggesting different websites. I think some of them are for things I used to have Bookmarked but don't anymore, but most of them are sites I've never heard of.

Can you reproduce in a "test" profile.

I've reset Firefox, which seems to have updated me to what I assume is a more recent version, and the problem seems to be solved.
