How to change default new tab URL when current URL cannot be removed.
I found out how to change the new tab URL in Firefox using about:config and entering a new Value after searching for browser.newtab.url on a forum. Problem is, the current URL set as the Value alongside browser.newtab.url in my Firefox is http://search.conduit.com... . Every time I try, I am able to pull up the field to switch the URL, and after typing in www.google.com and clicking OK, the search.conduit... URL remains unchanged in the Value column. I have been able to switch my homepage to Google when opening a new Firefox window, but not when opening new tabs. There must be something that this program/website has done to disallow the user to change their default URL when opening new tabs. Any ideas, or has anyone else come across this problem? Thank you.

You can check in "Windows Control Panel > Programs" for recently installed programs to see if anything from Conduit or any other suspicious software shows up.
You can check the target line in the Firefox desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties) to make sure that nothing is appended after the path to the Firefox program.
If you do not keep changes after a restart or otherwise have problems with preferences, see:

Hi, cor-el -
I had checked Control Panel > Programs, and didn't find anything that matched, which I think is why I went online to find a solution.
As it turns out, even though new tabs were opening on the conduit rather than Google search page after an initial restart, Google seems to be opening in new tabs now. The computer has been restarted several times since, so I wonder if it just took a little time to get set in place? After I made changes that were not working, there were two browser.newtab.url lines, one each of the two competing search pages. When I check browser.newtab.url in about:config now, the Value actually lists www.google.com and I cannot find a search.conduit link anywhere. It seems interesting that it may have taken a few restarts to get here.
I am happy. :) However, I also just noticed a sneaky little Conduit Search field beside my address bar. Now to do away with that.
Thanks for the support. I'll check out the link you provided just to see what I can learn.
