Can't set "Do this automatcally" when "Always Ask ( where to save)" is selected

"Where to save" should have nothing to do when "Open With" is selected.

But if I don't select "Always ask(where to save)" firefox doesn't remember the new "open with" selection and reverts back to the the default, which in no way can open the selected file (but is a different problem).

Saving the file has nothing to do with what we use to open it and seems like a bug to me.

I've seen a reference to this problem dated 2005,: Is there a setting I'm missing or hasn't it been fixed yet?

HI Ernie_D, The do this automatically option will only ask you once. This stored preference is in the Applications Tab of the Firefox Menu > Options sections.

What are you saving? Downloads will go to the default folder and I believe so does anything you right click and save.

It's not what I want to save, it's what I want to open: The save options should not stop me from being able to select and have FF remember the application that I want to use to open a file.

for some reason, FF decided to default to an app that cannot open an image file and every time I want to open that type o file, I have to browse to the app that will open it. I should not have to mess with the save options to select a new default app to open a file. They are completely separate operations.

If this is supposed to be FF's normal operation, then in my mind it is a design flaw.

Hi Ernie, I would be happy to direct you to the input.mozilla.org to leave feedback for the developers. However in order to change that option to select the default app to open a file with that menu is where you can change it in Firefox. Adding a Download action and setting automatic action for open with: http://kb.mozillazine.org/File_types_and_download_actions#Open...

OK, I removed the mimetypes.rdf file and restarted FF. There were only 9 file types on the applications panel.

The .gz file extension wasn't listed on the applications panel. After I selected engrampa to open the file, and restarted FF, it was displayed there and I got a choice to select an alternate app to open it with. I didn't see this option previously for the .jpg extension.

The .jpg file extension is not listed on the applications panel and I cannot locate a downloadable .jpg file to see how FF handles it: That is if it asks me what I want to do with it.

I'll wait and see how it goes having replaced the old mimetypes.rdf file.

I still say, combining opening and downloading in the same dialog is a design flaw, but maybe I'm expecting to much;

Thanks for your help and the pointer to the feedback page.

Regards,

Ernie D
