I want to be able to access those bookmarks on my new computer with the same firefox account. Is this possible? There is no active device to sync, are my old bookmarks saved on the firefox server somewhere?

As long as you haven't changed the Password for your Sync account, you should be able to recover your data from the Sync server.

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/how-do-i-set-sync-my-computer#w_create-a-sync-account Use Sign in to Sync as shown in that KB article. Then use the Already have an account? Sign in link as shown down that page a bit.
