Mac OS 10.6.8; Thunderbird 38.4.0; MS Word 2008. Files in MS Word .doc format appear to attach to email, but don't send with the email. The same file in .docx will properly attach and send with the email. Some recipients have older MS Word, and can't open .docx files. Is there a fix for this ?

What happens when you attempt to send a .doc attachment?

I don't think Thunderbird cares about what type of attachment you're sending. Do you run any anti-virus software?

What is the size of the .doc file compared to the .docx file?

You may also consider using File Link to send attachments. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/filelink-large-attachments

It works well in connection with Dropbox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/dropbox-for-filelink

What happens when you attempt to send a .doc attachment?

The .doc file appears to attach to the email and can be opened from the email before sending, but is gone, both in the file in the "sent" folder and in the email to the recipient.

What is the size of the .doc file compared to the .docx file?

The file saved as a .doc file is 90KB and the same file saved as a .docx file is 20KB.

Open the sent message with the .doc attachment in the Sent folder and press Ctrl-U.

This opens a new window with the message source. Is the attachment visible?

Again: Do you run any anti-virus software?
