Using Thinderbird Portable, the USB stick keeps getting smaller despite having Firefox re-directed to cache in a small partition on the sti ck. Thunderbird has the same structure, cache2/entries/ to hold internet and site information but I can find no mention of telling Thunderbird to use a separate location (where cache growth can be curtailed). Can you not limit the cache size by changing the setting in Tools/Options/Advanced/Network & Disk Space/Disk Space?

It appears the method for changing the cache location in Firefox is the same for TB.
