Hello. I have a Talk Talk / Tiscali Account with Thunderbird E-mail. Everything was working fine until half-an-hour ago when I got an error message TT602 when attempting to send an E-mail. ( previous E-mails sent earlier had worked OK ) I checked my in-coming and out-going server settings and they are all as recommended by Talk Talk. Also went on-line to check the Talk Talk connection and all showing up as OK. Does anyone know what the problem can be ? Many thanks. SG PS. I already posted this question on the Forum about a week ago but no-one has responded yet. The problem does not happen all the time - just occasionally. But it means I can't send any E-mails for a couple of hours. Then, eventually, it seems I can send them again. But it keeps happening. Can anyone help ? Thanks. SG.

Error TT602 - This is an error message sent to you by the TalkTalk server. The error message indicates that a limit counter has been triggered. This is a temporary stop on sending so the short answer is that in 24 hours the limit counter will be fully reset. Talktalk has filters to prevent spamming and also limits on the number of emails you can send per hour and per 24 hours. Remember that it's the number of recipients so 1 mail sent to 50 on a mailing list would count 50 not 1.

As with many servers they do not like to publically tell you what those limits are because this would help spammers and the object of the exercise is to stop spammers.

This is not Thunderbird stopping emails, it is TalkTalk refusing to send.

You would need to assess how many emails you have sent in eg: last hour prior to getting error message and also how many emails in the last 24 hours, so not necessarilly in a day, you could have sent X number yesterday and X today, but if the count exceeded a limit within 24 hours, it could trigger the spam filter to stop allowing sending.

However, I've checked various coments on the TalkTalk Support forum and it has been suggested that on occasions this error can be triggered by an Authentication issue, so worth checking server settings. https://community.talktalk.co.uk/t5/Articles/Email-settings-IMAP-amp-POP3/ta-p/2204399

Hello again Toad Hall. Your first suggestion concerning a " limit counter " seemed not to be relevant in my case. I tried sending a couple more E-mails to different E-mail addresses this afternoon, and each time got the same error message TT602 " too many E-mails." In any case, I had only sent two or three E-mails ( to different E-mail addresses ) during the previous few hours, so I don't see how the actual number of E-mails sent could be the problem. However, your second missive concerning a possible authentication issue seems much more probable.

I checked the E-mail settings yet again ( ! ) and changed the outgoing server setting for my Tiscali account to read smtp.talktalk.net. ( This instead of the recommended setting on the link you sent me which gives the correct setting as smtp.tiscali.co.uk.) When I changed the outgoing server setting to smtp.talktalk.net suddenly hey presto ( ! ) the E-mail was sent straight away. I have sent sent two or three other E-mails as well.

The only slight problem is that each time Thunderbird asks me for my password ( for the outgoing Tiscali account ) but - like I said - once I entered the password everything worked OK.

So it seems to me that the problem was definitely to do with the authentication settings, and nothing concerning " too many messages " but I still can't figure out why Tiscali / Talk Talk recommended E-mail settings show smtp.tiscali.co.uk when it works for me only after I changed that to smtp.talktalk.net. Perhaps the link you sent me ( recommended settings ) is out of date ?

Anyway, thanks again for your kind response.

SG.

Reading through a googled talktalk support, you are not alone in needing to swap that smtp setting. I wonder if this has anything to do with the 'migration' to TalkTalk servers. At least you now have it all working again.

someone was using a phone app, so not identical but ....When your tiscali email is migrated to the new TalkTalk Mail platform the 'phone email app will continue to work with the imap.tiscali.co.uk incoming server name and smtp.tiscali.co.uk outgoing server name.

another was using email client outlook 2016 and also iphone app with issues in both and the following fixed both. Re: Email account can receive but not send emails To solve changed smtp.tiscali.co.uk to smtp.talktalk.net

To check/update stored passwords: Menu app icon > Options > Privacy & security under 'Passwords' section click on 'Saved Passwords' button click on 'show passwords' button Look for the line with smtp.talktalk.net Right click on line and select 'Edit Password' - this allows you to edit the stored password. Please note that passwords themselves can only be created/modified in the webmail account accessed via abrowser; this area in Thunderbird can only use passwords that have already been set up.
