We have McAfee courtesy of BT Internet, and also use easyfundraising/easysearch toolbar.

Periodically (it will happen a lot, then not happen for a few days) when I click on a page link the new site will open and within a few seconds redirect to a Google search for something that I have not requested and couldn't make up if I wanted to; usually it is something like the most recent one: https://s-static.ak.facebook.com/connect/xd_arbiter.php?version=11 in Google's search bar. But I didn't ask for anything like this.

The Windows profile on which I am working is heavily restricted because of our children - no Facebook, Youtube or Twitter permitted, as well as other categories blocked. Almost all of these redirections concern Facebook or Twitter. We use both McAfee and authorised Mozilla plug-ins to regulate the access or blocks.

Maybe the page has an inserted element from Facebook or Twitter, and that is why it is being bypassed? Have you tried blocking Facebook and Twitter in Adblock Plus? That might work to remove elements from those sites?

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).

  • Do not click the Reset button on the Safe mode start window or otherwise make changes.
