when I click the new tab button on firefox, instead of bringing up the usual page showing what I usually go to, instead there is a white page (no HTML at all) there are no new extensions running and I have done many checks for any malware and bloatware on my computer with none found. I simply can't figure it out.

Try to use the SearchReset extension to reset some preferences to the default values.

Note that the SearchReset extension only runs once and then uninstalls automatically, so it won't show on the "Firefox > Add-ons" page (about:addons).

You can check the browser.newtab.url pref on the about:config page and make sure that it is set to about:newtab.
You can also check if you a a (dimmed) 3x3 grid icon in the top right corner of the about:newtab page to enable the New Tab page (browser.newtabpage.enabled).
