I don't have Windows 8 or 8.1 handy to experiment, but based on the long heritage of use of the Startup folder, and a bunch of online articles, I think this is worth a try.

Launch the File Explorer (new name for Windows Explorer) using whatever method you usually use. Based on its new search based metaphor, Microsoft suggest opening the charms bar on the right side and using the search box to find File Explorer. Or you probably can find it on the all programs screen down from the start page.

Navigate to your personal Startup folder by pasting this in the File Explorer address bar and pressing Enter:

%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Leave that window open and find your desktop. Select and copy your Firefox program shortcut. (Not sure this will work if it's pinned.)

Then, click in the Startup folder and paste. Any luck?

Note: An alternate way to start Firefox is to use the Task Scheduler. This has the nice feature than you can set a deferral period so that Windows has a minute or two to settle down before starting Firefox. However, this seems to be harder to find in Windows 8.
