I do not have a check mark for the address bar when I click on the Tools tab. Have version 29 and was just installed. Old version had a way to hide the address bar. And, when I wanted to use it, I could use command L. But cannot hide/disable using this Firefox version.

The classic theme restorer add-on can do this for you. Instructions are here - How to make the new Firefox look like the old Firefox .

Note that you won't be able to bring up a replacement location bar if you would remove the location bar with the Classic Theme Restorer extension as that code has been removed with Bug 953124.
So to be able to use the location bar you will have to keep it visible on a toolbar.

A possibility can be to collapse the location bar to a smaller width and expand it when you click the location bar to set focus to it.
