One of the recent versions of Firefox (31?) introduced a search box on new tab, over the speed dial thumbnails. How can I disable it? It makes for a really poor layout, taking a lot of space, squashing the thumbnails to flat forms.

It's actually not just the search field that takes up space. There's also space reserved for the "Undo" bar that only shows up when you press the [X] icon on a tile.

The simplest way to get rid of both is to install the New Tab Tools add-on. It also allows you to reduce the margins so that the tiles are larger. If you don't want the launcher at the bottom, you can turn that off in the Add-ons Manager: click the Options button next to New Tab Tools.
