Why does Tbird look for attachments in replies when there aren't any and the word is not mentioned?
When replying, Thunderbird sometimes displays a window that says "Attaching" when there is nothing to attach, nor is "attach" or "attachment" mentioned in the text. The sending of the message then hangs up. If it is stored in Drafts and then reopened the problem does not reappear.

images embedded in signatures are by far the most common cause of this.
So, if one wants to maintain the thread what can one do?
At this point turn off auto save for drafts in options. Or Do not edit a document long enough for the auto save to kick in.
Matt: Thanks for the suggestion. It strikes me as being a kludge and that the problem is really a bug. I've found that by saving a reply as a draft and then sending it the problem can be avoided. It really appears to be a bug. I haven't tried to pin it down but I think it happens when replying to a message that contained an attachment. That attachment is removed in the reply.
