Developer edition is not a name of a Firefox version but the name of one of four main development channels.

Release < Beta (b#) < Aurora (a2) (aka Developer edition) < Nightly (a1)

Currently Release has 47.0, Beta has 48.0 (currently at 48.0b1 build), Aurora has 49.0a2, Nightly has 50.0a1.

Aurora and Nightly channels gets checkins almost everyday so they get a update each of those days. This can mean there can be issues until fixed, finished or reverted. The Beta builds get say six to twelve builds for a version on channel at time.

Is there a reason why you are Testing builds on the Aurora aka developer edition channel?.

Extension authors tend to support Release versions as supporting builds past Beta channel can be difficult due to faster changes over time.

From what I've read dev edition is 'made for developers and has extra features etc etc', which led me to believe it is some kind of different product. I saw some of those extra features in normal firefox as well but I didn't care at that moment.

Why on its page it says 'The only browser made for developers like you.' if it is just beta(aurora) version of regular firefox?

The Aurora channel Developer Edition is alpha 2 stage, so is less stable than the Beta release.

Aurora aka Developers Edition was something Mozilla did to try and attract more people who were using the more unstable Nightly to Test Aurora channel builds more.

Yes the developers tools enabled on those builds is a attraction also.

One thing Mozilla did to make it easier for people to Test these builds is it creates a separate profile from other Firefox versions installed on your machine by default. Not every Firefox user is aware of the ProfileManager.

Many people were using Nightly channel if only to have Win64 builds of Firefox. Aurora then got it and then Beta later started as of 38.0b2 build if I recall. Release has had Win64 Firefox since 42.0.
