Prior to going on Windows 10 when I deleted email on my iphone 6s AND was away from the office when I returned to the office and launched Thunderbird the emails would be there. Now that I am on Windows 10 if I delete my emails from my iphone when away from the office the emails are NOT there when I launch Thunderbird. BTW comcast.net is my outgoing server both on the PC and the iphone. Some might say why do you want to delete the same email twice valid question. I like the ability to see the message again when I return to the office. If I leave the email on the iphone all day there is too many that are in my in box (on the iphone) Any suggestions out there?

Thanks for getting back to me. I upgraded to win 10 and soon after I got a new iphone so now I don't know what to think. To get to your questions thurderbird server is a pop and the iphone server is an IMAP. I am looking forward to your response.

Sounds like you have the iPhone set to use IMAP and deleting a message from an IMAP device removes it from the server.

Can you explain how I can change this setting on my iphone?

No, this is not an iPhone forum.

Sorry no. I use Android devices and Thunderbird does not run on phones. You should Google IMAP vs POP to learn how the 2 formats work. Imap message stay on the server and do not fill up your phone as you seem to think.

If the cause were a setting on your phone, then the problem would have started if you had made a change to your phone, not when going to Windows 10.

When you say "going on Win 10", did you upgrade your OS, or move to different computer?

In Thunderbird, go to Tools > Account Settings, then go to Server Settings. At the top, it should tell you what type of account it is. On your phone, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, tap you your mail account. At the top, it should tell you what type of account it is.

In both cases, does it say "IMAP"? If so, we'll work from there.

Okay, I think I understand what's going on. When you delete the messages on your phone, they get deleted from the server, so when you open Thunderbird later on and check for new messages, it says there are no new messages.

First, let's explain the difference between POP and IMAP. POP = Post Office Protocol. As the name suggests, it acts like a post office. You pick up your messages from there, and they are are no longer at the post office when you've picked them up. IMAP = Internet Message Access Protocol. The way IMAP works is you are working with messages on the server.

POP is good if you're only access messages from one computer, and have dialup. IMAP is good if you want to access your messages from more than one device. Pretty much everyone defaults to IMAP nowadays.

In your case, even though you're access messages from more than one device, you don't seem to want to sync them, but rather use your iphone to preview messages before downloading them in Thunderbird. To do that, you can set up the account on your iphone as a POP account, then set it to leave a copy of each message on the server.

  1. Delete the account on your iphone.
  2. Create a new account, and make sure to choose POP instead of IMAP.
  3. After the account is created, go to the account settings, and tap on Advanced.
  4. In the advanced settings, make sure Delete from server is set to Never.
