Firefox won't show the purple mask when you start Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History). In permanent PB mode all windows are New Private Window by default. You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab and get the purple mask.
