How about using the instructions for Windows 7 and Vista? https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/change-program-used-open-email-links#w_windows-7-and-vista

Does that work for you?

Same problem Clicking on an mailto link in say excel does not bring me to firefox and gmail. I have Windows 10. My default browser is set to Firefox. Within Firefox the mailto is set to gmail and this works if I am in Firefox. Under Windows/Control panel/Default apps/email Firefox is not listed as an option.
