Heya, I just updated toward version 55 and I realize, while I only have a dozen tabs open, that it is much slower (switching tabs, scrolling, loading etc) than the version I had before (52 if I remind correctly) with 200 tabs (yes 200). Moreover I noticed the same thing when I tried version 53, it was so bad that I reinstalled version 52 !

Have others noticed this difference ? if yes is there a setting to change in new versions ? From my point of view I did not change the preferences or extensions or even my system, so the issue would come from the update.

You can try to modify multi-process settings to see if this has effect.

  • set dom.ipc.processCount to 1 if it is currently set to a higher value (4)
  • disable multi-process windows in Firefox

You can disable multi-process windows in Firefox by setting these prefs to false on the about:config page.

  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart = false
  • browser.tabs.remote.autostart.2 = false

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.
