rr.com emails not sending. Service not available or unknown greeting
About 2 weeks ago I started having issues sending emails. I would get a "incorrect greeting" message but the email would go to the sent folder. At first I wasn't sure it had or hadn't sent.... Called spectrum and of course webmail works so it must be email client issue... I don't believe it. I cannot seem to find others with google experiencing this but I can't believe it is just me. 52.4.0 T-Bird on OS 10.11.6 I have tried alternate outgoing servers and none seem to work. I tried changing outgoing port to 587 and the message is "service not available"

I tried changing outgoing port to 587 and the message is "service not available"
You'll need to set 'Connection security' to STARTTLS. This should also change the port no. to 587.
If this doesn't fix it, please post your Troubleshooting Information again with the changed settings. Just the 'Mail and News Accounts' section will do.
rochester.rr.com accounts are TimeWarner accounts, and they recommend using mail.twc.com on port 587, Connection security = none, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, and User name = your email address.

Check with your email provider what the correct server settings are. You may post them here.
I did that 3 times- the reps on the phone don't seem to understand what they are speaking of, but they all gave the same info. The servers are correct and the ports are 587 or 25. I have tried all combinations/permutations. Even the mobile server on my phone has stopped working. I will try them again. I would guess Spectrum is doing away with rr servers.... ;-(

Yes they are, you would have to be the tenth person with obsolete rr.com server names in their config to appear on this forum in the past week. You need to restart your server names to those specified (the TWC server) for incoming (pop) and outgoing (SMTP)
I see from your last troubleshooting information post that you have not updated the server namest and the servers are still the old RR.com ones.
Well the search on this site needs to be fixed - I searched "rr.com" among others and turned up nothing in 2017....
I did use the twc.com server with ports 587 and 25. (see bottom of posting #4) Nothing works. Spectrum support has been useless.
Incoming works fine the way it is- only outgoing is failing
Any ideas what the "proper" twc server would be? Not sure why it is a national secret.
I did use the twc.com server with ports 587 and 25.
I cannot imagine TWC offer SMTP without security. As said before, set 'Connections security' to STARTTLS and Port to 587.
They never have had security: I tried again-
An error occurred while sending mail: Outgoing server (SMTP) error. The server responded: Service not available, closing transmission channel.

Reports on the TWC forum suggest it's a Spectrum problem and isn't restricted to just TB users. Some users have found that using the full email address for the User name resolves the issue; others have found this doesn't help.
Another oddity - when I use my phone it won't send on wifi - error " the connection to the outgoing server "mobile-smtp.roadrunner.com" failed. But when I go cellular it sends fine..... AHHHHH!!
It seems like it must be their problem- it just is so frustrating that they have no clue...
Thanks everybody for trying to help ! I guess it is time to figure out a better email.
