There is a new update for Mozilla Firefox but it undoes one of my specificiations. Normally with my browser, I keep tabs open so when I close the browser, it goes back to those tabs when I return, as I use the option which says "show your windows and tabs from last time."

However, when I update the browser and I have to restart, it completely eliminates the tabs I've had before. Instead, it goes to other tabs from weeks ago, which I no longer need. In other words, any current tabs I had before are removed. The only way I can go back to those tabs is if I do a "system restore" with the computer.

I've updated my browser a few times and it's the same issues, so I stopped for a week or two in the hopes it would be fixed. I tried it again late Sunday night and once again, it eliminates my previous tabs and replaces it with another set of tabs I had weeks ago. Even when I go to "History" and try to "restore closed tabs", the "closed tabs" are those I no longer need. I have to do another "system restore" and the browser returns to the "saved" tabs I am currently using.

Short version: new update for the browser seems to eliminate the set of tabs I had before the update, or replaces it with a set of tabs from a few weeks ago. I want to be able to keep the tabs I had before the update without having to do a "system restore", which allows the browser to go back to the version before the update.

I don't have screenshots of what I'm going through but I'm able to answer any questions needed, perhaps others may be going through the same issue too.

I hate to break this to you but : Note : Firefox 56.0.2 is current release https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ Note : Firefox 57 Quantum release date Nov 14th https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/quantum/ Note : Legacy Extensions will be disabled and or removed.

Suggest for the issue open from Firefox Tool Bar --> History--> Restore Previous Session Alternatively : Firefox Tool Bar --> History--> Show All History then delete what ever months you want from the past so that these do not get opened any more.

And have a look at Extensions : https://www.google.ca/search?dcr=0&q=firefox+tab+session+extension&spell=1&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjlou_i-ZfXAhUhqVQKHSuEAZ8QvwUIIygA&biw=1366&bih=604

This is why I said the new update doesn't work properly for me, meaning version 56.0.2. When I began using the updated version that began in late September, I was using version 55.0.3.

Per your suggestions, I deleted a few months in the history. I installed the new update, this is 56.0.2. When it restarted, all of the tabs I had before/saved are gone. I no longer have the "restore previous session" opiton nor am I able to restore the closed tabs I had before I updated Firefox. Instead of older tabs I had a few months go, they pop up blank, meaning the browser features 8 or 9 blank tabs instead of any pages I may have visited. I have to do another "system restore" in order to go back to the version of Firefox that didn't give me any issues, which is 55.0.3. Once I update to 56, I lose my tabs. Even when I look to Tools >>> Options >>> General, my original options to "show windows and tabs from last time" are unchanged. Each time I upgrade, I lose those tabs and it's the "system restore" again.

Okay, I looked at my extensions. I use Xmarks and it seems I had an earlier version so I updated it to its latest version to see if that was the issue. Things seemed okay. Then I updated Firefox. Unfortunately, same thing again so I did another "system restore". There was an outdated extension, or it stated that it is no longer compatible with Firefox and it suggested that I delete/remove it. Did so. No other issues with other add-ons and none of them said I needed to delete it.

I don't know if Xmarks is the issue but I never had a problem with losing tabs before until this current update. As of now, I'm back on Firefox 55.0.3 and I'm using the latest version of Xmarks, version 4.5.0.4. Keep in mind I simply surf around, I'm not an expert on browsers other than using them so if I'm missing something in my description here, I apologize. I only say this because I don't know if Xmarks is the issue but by updating it, it does say it is compatible with the latest or forthcoming version of Firefox.

At one point, I looked at the bookmarks on Xmarks and decided to update Firefox, then just create a new set of tabs similar to what I had before. I closed the browser and restarted the computer. I go back to Firefox and once more, all the tabs are gone. No "restore previous session" option and when I "restore closed tabs", I'm unable to. When I upgrade Firefox, I get the Firefox page which says "Firefox is up to date". This is a page I never received before when I'd get updates but now when i see this page, I know immediately that my saved tabs have been removed/deleted and I have to do a "system restore" in order to return to the previous version of Firefox with my tabs there.

I've never had problems with Firefox over the years but this one has me a bit baffled because I don't know what to do or how to proceed.

Another reply. Without me selecting "update", the browser updated itself. It states it's currently using "56.0 (32-bit)" but I now have the option to update to 56.0.2. I didn't update to 56.0.2 yet but currently I get another page saying the browser has been updated. That the only page open on the browser. I go to the "open menu", click "History" and since "restore previous session" is not an option, I choose "restore closed tabs". I get that new set of tabs again but it shows me a few options pages, my e-mail page and other pages on Mozilla, all of which were not the last set of tabs I had before the update. Now, I had used a few of these pages before, sometimes a day before, sometimes a week before but none are the pages I had previously but when I do, I close each page.

So now, I must "system restore" once again.

You can't always rely on how a web page detects your Firefox version.

Correct, which is why I apologized by not being specific about what I had. I did mention it when I realized I wasn't that detailed.

Okay, as I stated in the second reply, the version I'm using is 55.0.3. When I updated it to 56.0.2, that's when things not working for me. I had to do a system restore a number of times to go back to 55.0.3 in order for the browser to work as I had it before. I updated Xmarks a few times, as I believed that was the issue for my tabs to disappear each time. I've updated, downgraded back to 55.0.3, and updated/downgraded a number of times and still no luck.

If you have Windows System Restore then best would be to reinstall the version you want to use and try a new clean profile as well since downgrading a profile might corrupt your profile.

All Firefox releases on the Mozilla server:

You can create a new profile to test if your current profile is causing the problem.

See "Creating a profile":

If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.

I'm still going through what was mentioned/suggested. So far, no luck in figuring it out but this is where I'm at.

I made an attempt to create a new profile while retaining the original. Then I looked to be sure which version of the browser I was using. When I did that, it would say "Restart to update Firefox". I figured since I did have the original profile, I would be able to go back to what I had, even if updating FIrefox would not make it possible.

Also of note: I did a screenshot of it but look at the tabs on the top. These are what I have on my browser when I shut down and normally when I come back, all of those tabs are still there. When I updated Firefox and I get the page which says "Firefox is up to date", the bookmarks remain the same. However, the tabs are different, not the tabs I had before I updated.

I did the option where I'd be able to start Firefox by using the profile but it's not the same. The tabs are something different entirely.

Thus, I knew I had to do a system restore once more. Before I clicked for it to happen, I did a screenshot of the "system restore" page so it would show what was being. It tells me it would delete the updated version, which is 56.0, and go back to 55.0.3, the version that I had before and what works for me. Now, when I do upgrade, it tells me I am currently using 56.0. However, it tells me to update it to 56.0.2. Once I go to the *.0.2 version, that's when my saved tabs are replaced.

I have not run Firefox in "safe mode" to find out what add-ons may be the possible issue. I want to be sure this is something I should do. Or am I missing something that is leading to this?

As I said before, my Firefox was working completely fine until I was told to upgrade to version 56.0 and beyond. I want to keep on using Firefox so my surfing can be a smooth process but I don't know what to do next in order for it to work.

The only other add-ons I use are Ghostery and Xmarks, neither of which conflicted previous versions. I also don't want to make this more complex than it should be, I'm sure the issues are more basic than I think they are but again, I don't know what to do next.

Almost two months ago, I had a problem. Almost two months later, still haven't got a reply but I tried to update my Firefox and once again, when it is updated, it clears out everything and it's a new set of tabs, not the tabs I had in the previous section.
