in gmail --changed from imap to pop. all changes successfully saved. in thunderbird changed incoming server to pop.gmail.com, port 995 after changes saved heading still reads imap as server. Results no incoming mail. cannot send out mail either

You create a POP account with the same address. As stated YOU CANNOT change the account settings that you entered into Thunderbird from one format to another. This has absolutely nothing to do with you getting a new email account and address. Try reading the link provided above.
