Here are the settings for my own "working" btinternet account:
account44: INCOMING: account44, , (imap) mail.btinternet.com:993, SSL, passwordCleartext OUTGOING: , mail.btinternet.com:465, SSL, passwordCleartext, true
No significant differences.
I said "working" in quotes at the top simply because it is my least reliable account. I often get the message box asking for the password. If I ignore that and try later, often as not it works. So the settings are OK. Maybe the server is slow and Thunderbird impatient. Or Thunderbird too tardy and the server is impatient?
Looking at a message recently received into the btinternet account, I see this in the headers:
Received: from 8.7.42.195 (EHLO rgin14.bt.int.cpcloud.co.uk) (65.20.0.12) by mta1020.bt.mail.ir2.yahoo.com with SMTP; Sun, 28 Jan 2018 18:51:36 +0000
I knew they (bt) were switching over to Critical Path Inc. (cpcloud) and so am surprised to see yahoo still in the mix. Nothing connected to yahoo seems to work particularly well. :-(
Thanks Zenos. Appears no one is able to help so I will ditch BTmail and use my business one.
There are some timeout values that could be tweaked, but in the absence of a specific timeout related error, I'm not so sure they are useful or relevant.
I take it you get that unhelpful and bland "failed to connect" error message?
